USENIX Selects Xirrus as Wi-Fi Provider for 2008 Events
Xirrus to Focus on Regional Events that Foster Network Education and Innovation
Xirrus, Inc., the only Wi-Fi "Power-Play" that can replace Ethernet workgroup switches with Wi-Fi as the primary network connection, has been chosen to provide Wi-Fi connectivity for USENIX (the Advanced Computing Systems Association) conferences and symposiums covering topics such as network design and implementation, systems administration, network security, electronic voting, etc. These events are essential meeting grounds for the presentation, discussion, and application of technical advances in all aspects of computing systems.
After deploying the most successful Wi-Fi network three times in a row at Interop Las Vegas and New York-proving the Wi-Fi Array to be the most powerful Wi-Fi solution on the market today-Xirrus has changed its event strategy to focus on regionally-based events that foster technical intelligence, vision, and innovation among network and systems engineers.
"We see tremendous value in events, like those sponsored by USENIX, that concentrate on small to medium groups of engineers and IT professionals who have the knowledge, vision, and capability of increasing the performance and efficiency of networks," said Alan Amrod, vice president of sales and marketing at Xirrus. "The larger shows offer good branding opportunities, but lack the focus and capability to work in teams to solve real world network problems.
The Xirrus Wi-Fi solution was chosen by USENIX for its high performance and ease of deployment, specifically:
- Coverage - Over 2X the range, 4X the coverage per cable drop
- User Density - Up to 50 power users per cable drop
- Bandwidth - Up to 864Mbps of 802.11a/b/g bandwidth per cable drop
- Throughput - Up to 500 Mbps of 802.11 a/b/g throughput per cable drop
- Ease of Deployment - 75% fewer devices, cables, and switch ports with automatic channel selection, cell sizing, coverage shaping, and spectrum analysis
"Xirrus was brought in by Carnegie Mellon University to supply the Wi-Fi network at our last Large Installation System Administration Conference," said Ellie Young, executive director of the USENIX Association. "With the Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays, we were able to deliver a powerful Wi-Fi network for thousands of conference attendees using a fraction of the devices, cabling, and man hours of other offerings used in past events."
